A vision came true: The Stadtbahn

On September 8, 1977 the underground tramway construction was continued near Bielefeld Central Station. Those “U-Strabs” (Unterpflasterstraßenbahnen) are now known as Stadtbahn, a combination of tramway, metro and commuter railway. The first part of the Bielefeld metro network containing 5 kilometres underground tracks and five underground stations was opened on April 28, 1991, the second part with two more stations and about 3 kilometres underground followed on Sept. 2, 2000. The new line connects the Central Station with the university. Finally the western parts of the city got their LRT metro—nearly 90 years after the canceled Bürgerweg tram line.
