Since June 2007 I am employed as a research associate by the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO). In addition, I am affiliated as a visiting scholar with the Geomatics Lab of the Geography Department, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
I am particularly interested in human-environment interactions in the framework of sustainability science. Empirically, I deal with the integration of socioeconomic with biogeophysical data. This necessitates temporally and spatially explicit approaches as well as a mix of methods from different scientific arenas. Specifically, I combine methodological approaches from regional economic development, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), spatial statistics, machine learning, and landscape ecology.
In my empirical work I concentrate on spatially explicit analysis of land-use and land-cover changes (LUCC) and issues pertaining to rural development. I am particularly interested in the patterns and processes of forest cover changes and cropland dynamics as well as in the interactions of land use change, the state of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services. I carried out empirical research using spatially explicit methods to examine land change in Central and Eastern Europe, European Russia, Transcaucasia, Vietnam, Southwestern China, Kenya, and Uganda.
