I am Deputy Head of the Department Structural Change of Farms and Rural Areas at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) as well as lecturer and associated scientist at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The overarching goal of my research program is to advance our understanding of land-system change, including its multiple repercussions on human welfare, food production, carbon balance and biodiversity. I have approached these issues through quantitative and qualitative assessments alike, and my work is characterized by integrative approaches that combine my expertise in resource economics and natural sciences.
I apply a wide range of methods and conduct empirical work at different spatial scales. Specifically, I combine methodological approaches from regional economics, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), spatial statistics, and artificial intelligence. The current geographic focus of my work is Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Western China, and Southeast Asia.
