Studium der Architektur und Agrarwissenschaften an der Technischen Universität Berlin, Abschluss Dipl. Ldw., Promotion zum Dr. agr. und wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Institut für Tierproduktion der TU Berlin; 1975-1977 Lecturer am Department of Animal Production, University of Nairobi, Kenia; 1977-1981 Projektleiter des UNESCO-MAB "Traditional Livestock Management Project" im Marsabit-District, Kenia; 1981-1987 Senior Lecturer am Department of Animal Production, University of Nairobi, gleichzeitig Leiter der "Small Ruminant and Camel Research Station" der University of Nairobi; 1987-1994 Professor für "Biologische Grundlagen der Tierproduktion" am Institut für Tierproduktion der TU Berlin; seit 1994 Professor für "Nutztierökologie" am Institut für Nutztierwissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Studienaufenthalte und Gutachten in mehr als 30 Ländern in Afrika, Asien und der Karibik; Publikationen schließen auch vier Lehrbücher ein.
Am 1. April 2007 Eintritt in den Ruhestand und Auflösung des Fachgebietes. Seither reduzierte Fortführung des Lehrangebotes im Wintersemester. (Pflichtmodul: Ecosystems of Agricultural Landscapes and Sustainable Land Use).

(equivalent to MSc) in Agricultural Sciences (1970); PhD in Animal Science (1974) at Technical University Berlin. 1970 - 1974 Assistant Lecturer at the Institut of Animal Production, Technical University Berlin; 1975 - 1977 Lecturer in the Department Animal Production, University of Nairobi; 1977 - 1981 Project Manager of the UNESCO - MAB "Traditional Livestock Management Project" in Marsabit District, Kenya; 1981 - 1987 Lecturer in the Department of Animal Production, University of Nairobi, simultaneously Leader of the "Small Ruminant and Camel Research Station" in Isiolo District, Kenya; 1987 -1994 Professor for "Biology of Animal Production" at the Institute of Animal Production, Technical University Berlin; 1994 - 2007 Professor for "Livestock Ecology", Humboldt-University of Berlin. Short term studies and consultancies in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Publications include four textbooks
Retirement by 1. April 2007 and closure of the Livestock Ecology Section. Since then reduced teaching activities during winter semesters only (Module: Ecosystems of Agricultural Landscapes and Sustainable Land Use).
