One day at the beginning of the summer vacations in the USA, a 14-year-old blonde
girl with freckles on her nose stood under the big international departure board
at Boston airport and was so excited that she couldn't take in anything her mother
was saying. Her name was Lisa and she was going to fly all by herself to her grandparents in
London. She had never left the States before and could hardly wait to get to London
and see the sights - and the London boys! She had even gone regularly to a fitness
centre to get rid of the weight she had put on through consuming endless burgers, cokes
and popcorn when meeting her best friends and talking about boys...
She glanced up at the huge board overhead, her flight still hadn't come up. Once
again she started thinking about London. Her mother actually came from there, but
she didn't talk much about the city. As a matter of fact, she had met Lisa's father,
her future husband, in London. He had been staying there for three months while travelling
around Europe as a student. She had gone out to Boston to marry him and become Mrs
Miller, later the mother of three kids.
Lisa was the youngest of the three and the only one who had never been to England.
All that was about to change at last. When would her flight finally be displayed
on the board?
Lisa had her own ideas about the British, especially about the boys. She always
looked at pictures of Prince William in magazines. He looked like a dream! So well-dressed
in a suit and a tie, much cooler than the boys at school with their faded cut-off
jeans, baseball caps and old T-shirts. She asked herself if all the boys in England
looked like William... She started daydreaming...
Suddenly she realised that she was already close to forgetting Robert, her boyfriend,
who was in another class. She thought of the little photo of him which she was carrying
in her beauty case. How often would she look at it when she was in London?
Suddenly she realised that new flights had appeared on the board. There it was.
Check-in at gate 8, she was on her way at last! All she had to do was say good-bye
to Mom once again and listen to her good advice for the 1000th time.
Suddenly she found that she had tears in her eyes. What was her mother saying?
Lisa struggled to concentrate...
"Listen to what your granny and grandad tell you, give them both a big kiss and
hug from me and whatever you do, don't forget to give my regards to Big Ben. I had
the time of my life thanks to Ben."
Lisa was completely puzzled. Big Ben? Who was he and why had Mom never talked about
him before? She waved to her mother for the last time.
Big Ben.
She decided she was going to find him as soon as she could, perhaps he had a cool
son who would be able to show her around London. Maybe she would even fall in love
with him a bit...
